Relay raises $36 million with International Paper leading the round. Examine the customer-investor relationship and the next tests for frontline technology.

Relay announced $36 million in new funding on September 30, with International Paper leading the round. The frontline communications company said the investment brings its total capital raised above $90 million. Its announcement, distributed by PR Newswire, names Cerity Partners clients, Harmonic Growth Partners and Thayer Investment Partners among the other new investors.

The distinctive feature is the relationship between investor and product user. International Paper is an industrial operator backing technology intended for the physical workplace. That makes this a useful startup story to follow beyond the size of the cheque: an investment can express confidence in a supplier, while also giving the customer a financial interest in its success.

What the funding is intended to support

Relay says it will expand its software and AI capabilities, safety tools, enterprise integrations, frontline hardware and hiring. One planned software layer would let teams ask questions about shift data and act on the answers. The company also reports 99% gross revenue retention and 130% net revenue retention among enterprise customers. Those are company figures, not independently audited results obtained by GlobalTechRanks.

The investment therefore sits across hardware, communications and operational software. Our reading is that Relay's commercial test will be whether those pieces make information easier to use at the moment a worker or supervisor needs it. A conversation that helps one person solve a problem can become more valuable if the next shift can find the answer without repeating the investigation.

That is also where implementation becomes difficult. A recorded conversation does not automatically become a reliable work instruction. Businesses need to distinguish an observation from an approved procedure, identify who can change a record and decide which actions require a supervisor. Those are useful evaluation questions for any frontline AI system, rather than capabilities this funding announcement establishes Relay has already solved.

A customer investment is evidence with limits

For founders selling into industry, the round illustrates a possible route to financing: demonstrate enough relevance to a large buyer that it wants a stake in the supplier. For prospective customers, however, the investor relationship should be considered alongside deployment references, support terms and measurable results.

A practical evaluation would begin with one workflow, such as a shift handover. Teams could compare how often important information is missed, how quickly an issue reaches the right person and how much extra administrative work the system creates. A successful demonstration should improve the work itself, rather than merely produce more transcripts or summaries.

Relay's announcement establishes new capital and a stated expansion plan. The next evidence to watch is how that money changes deployed products and customer outcomes. A customer leading the round is a meaningful signal of interest; repeatable results across different workplaces would be the stronger proof of a durable business.
